Convergence '95: the search for digital content
Article Abstract:
There are many more companies and alliances in place to seek control over digital-media pipelines. The emphasis has shifted over the past year away from the pipelines themselves, towards acquisition of content. Telephone companies have been creating their own networks and making deals with the entertainment industry as they plan to go into television. Cable TV companies are still working on their own interactive TV broadband trials, and looking into expanding into telephony. Although ITV is still far in the future, there is a growing focus on computer-based interactive media. More publishers are trying to link CD-ROM and online as a precursor to broadband cable services. The World Wide Web has become immensely popular, with many companies launching Web home pages. Online services are taking in tremendous amounts of money, and Internet providers continue to grow at an accelerated pace.

NT workstation race heats up
Article Abstract:
Dell, Gateway, Compaq and Micro Electronics are beginning to roll out 300MHz Pentium II-based 3D workstations that run Windows NT. Catering to a rapidly growing commodity market, the mail-order vendors will offer systems for as little as $5,000. While IBM, DEC and HP will be forced to cut prices on their Pentium II-based workstations, dedicated high-end vendors such as NeTpower and Intergraph will have to specialize even more. Dual processors, Ultra-Wide SCSI hard disks, 3D accelerators and hefty amounts of RAM are likely to become popular options. IBM, HP, NeTpower, Gateway, Dell and Micron will offer Intel's 440LX memory controller chip, which replaces the pokey PCI bus with the 66MHz Accelerated Graphics Port. However, high-end workstations will overcome the PCI problem with powerful 3D boards loaded with VRAM and DRAM.
