Choosing the right digital asset management solution
Article Abstract:
Off-the-shelf digital asset management (DAM) solutions now proliferate and providers now number more than 100. When choosing a DAM product, it is important to first define and prioritize the goals for the system. There are five major types of DAM solutions, namely, desktop solutions for individual users with private content; collaborative solutions for sharing media among a tight-knit group; process-oriented solutions that focus on workflow; industry-centric solutions for sharing data with suppliers, contractors and other partners; and merchant-centric solutions that enable an enterprise to provide services to online customers. DAM solutions can also be categorized by architecture; media catalogs and asset repositories are the two major types. It is best to keep in mind that no single solution could solve all problems.

The rise of the house of Inscape
Article Abstract:
Startup Inscape has developed a highly creative and innovative CD-ROM game, the Edgar Allan Poe-inspired The Dark Eye. Inscape is the two-year-old merger of Time Warner Interactive and WarnerActive. Its first product, the $49.95 Dark Eye, consists of a dilapidated house in which each room realizes an interactive Poe short story or poem. The player must visit every room twice, as murderer and as victim. The horror game was created using stop-motion animation with puppets in highly detailed costumes that were integrated into 3D backgrounds rendered with Adobe After Effects. The lighting and overall ambience reflect the mood of Poe's writing. Thomas Dolby developed the software's sound, and William S. Burroughs reads the stories and poems.

Caligari trueSpace3
Article Abstract:
Caligari's $795 trueSpace3 is an impressive update of the best general-purpose 3D modeling and animation software for the PC platform. trueSpace3's addition of Physical Simulation and Inverse Kinetics features are, alone, worth the $299 upgrade fee. In addition to that, the product gains support for VRML 1.0, Metaballs editing, a Magnetic tool, support for third-party plug-ins, support for Photoshop plug-ins, support for 3D sound, a 3D paint tool, and Plastiform editing. The product's interface remains largely unchanged from the previous version, with the majority of modeling done in the main scene window. Existing modeling tools include standard primitives, Boolean, lathe, sweep, deformation, and vertex editing.
