Computer voices: look who's talking, too
Article Abstract:
Text-to-speech technology is rapidly changing the way people interact with computers and is allowing them to type in screenplays and hear them played back, and hear Web pages over the phone. One emerging application of the technology involves producing CD-ROM titles for children. For example, Theatrix has produced Hollywood High, in which animated characters play back skits typed in by children. Hollywood High uses text-to-speech technology licensed from SoftVoice, in which a format synthesizer approach is used. Companies are also beginning to utilize voice processing technology in VRML chat. Many developers like Voxware want to go directly to voice chat rather than text-to-voice. Voxware's ToolVox products achieve this effect via compression and voice-manipulation technology. VRML developer OnLive Technologies has already incorporated live chat by lip-synchronization of head-only avatars to chatter's live voices.

Article Abstract:
VDOnet has the apparent edge in the nascent Internet video market with its new VDOLive architecture. Other arena contenders are Iterated Systems, with its Fractal Image Format, Xing Technology's StreamWorks, and NBC Desktop's Video on Demand. One problem with this new area is the lack of standardization, with each manufacturer holding its own proprietary standard. So far, VDOnet offers the greatest scalability and the most alliances. However, NBC Desktop Video, a joint venture between Microsoft and NBC, could be promising for the future.
