Designing pages for people with disabilities
Article Abstract:
Bobby is the new seal of approval for Web sites that are accessible to people with disabilities. It incorporates the World Wide Web Consortium Web Accessibility Initiative's universal design (UD) guidelines. Making Web sites more accessible to the disabled means reaching a wider audience. It involves enhancing pages with audio for the visually impaired and with text for the hearing-impaired. Images can also be augmented with text descriptions. The Center for Applied Special Technology's Web site evaluates Web sites for free, using Bobby as the benchmark. While there is no regulation that requires that Web sites should be accessible to the disabled, the issue is triggering industry interest because of the potential for expanding audiences by providing universal access. For example, text-to-speech technology, developed for the blind, can be used by commuters wanting to access their e-mail in their cards.

Get me the money
Article Abstract:
'Ad-reach' networks have simplified online advertising for small- and medium-sized businesses by helping these businesses generate advertising dollars via ad banners. The networks interact with the ad agency media buyer and then deliver, rotate and track ads; pay for the use of Web pages; and provide click-through rates to the advertiser and ad agency. Companies have a single contact for all of their online advertising needs and have access to banners that utilize the latest technologies. Most networks base payment on a Web site's 'rate card,' or established 'cost per thousand' (CPM) rate. Other networks base their pay on a pre-established rate, which may be a pre-established fee or based on CPM.
