Despite challengers, CRTs retain dominance

Cathode ray tube (CRT) displays will retain its dominance, despite the challenges posed by emerging display technologies such as liquid crystal display (LCD), field emission display and plasma panel display (PDP). However, analysts warned that CRT's market share will slowly decline. By The LCD market in Europe will continue to improve at around 8% per year in the next four years, while CRT market will increase at about 3.5% a year by 2003.

Japan's electronic industry held its largest annual event called the Japan Electronics Show 99. Large-screen plasma display panels, reflective and semi-transmissive liquid crystal displays (LCDs) for portable equiment, large thin-film transistor LCDs for TVs and 2mm-thin color organic electroluminescence (EL) displays were among those exhibited. Intense competition in the EL display area was particularly evident to visitors.
