Floppy Disk Drives Gain in Japan As Peripheral Media of Widest Use
Article Abstract:
Fifty percent annual growth rates will help put Japanese floppy disk production at ten million units by March 1985. Japan is also in the position of the world's largest supplier, exporting about seventy percent of production. A stabilized U.S. personal computer market, and growing numbers of Japanese language word processors are major reasons. Matsushita, Sony, NEC and Canon are major players. World demand will be 15.5 million in 1984. Japanese dominance in the 3-inch and 3.5-inch floppies is expected to help its position as the world's supplier. The 3.5-inch will eventually move past the 5.25-inch as the most popular floppy. The 5.25-inch market will have an annual growth rate of thirty percent. Increasing density is being coupled with lower prices. All Japanese manufacturers are raising production. A graph on exports and a table describing the floppy market are shown.
