Heavy-duty computing
Article Abstract:
The Kontron Elektronik IP Lite PW5 is a portable notebook for settings that require ultrarugged machines. Designed for use on factory floors or other extreme environments, the unit measures 18"x 15.7"x 5.6" and weighs a hefty 21.8 pounds. The extra weight is used to protect the insides of the computer with a fully sealed magnesium case, designed to protect the computer from vibration, shock, moisture and dust. The notebook is priced at under $10,000, and does not include many of the features normally associated with notebook computers. What the user does get is a machine capable of handling nearly any amount of punishment. Besides a metal casing covering the outside of the unit, the notebook has a scratchproof screen, and a keyboard tray mounted on a foil base designed to keep dirt and moisture out of the inner workings of the keyboard. The unit boasts fairly impressive speed in testing, with a 200MHz processor and a fast and smooth operating CD-ROM drive.

WinBook FX 166MHz MMX; turning over a new leaf
Article Abstract:
WinBook FX's $3,999 FX has been improved to fit the needs of mid-priced portable computer users. The 6.7-pound multimedia traveling companion has eliminated previous reliability problems with an FX machine. The FX easily handles multimedia software and large applications suites, plus software tailored for MMX. WinBook FX contains a 166MHz Pentium processor with MMX enhancement, along with a 2.8GB hard drive and a 10x CD-ROM drive that is interchangeable with the floppy disk. A 12.1-inch active matrix screen appears somewhat dim, especially when the computer is first activated. The FX keyboard's noises somewhat offset its abundant control menu and reasonable comfort. Excellent speakers, which resemble the quality of small portable radios, enhance presentation or multimedia applications. The quiet FX's lithium-ion battery indicates LED-charge status through lights placed underneath the computer.
