Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in the Workplace: There Is a Way Out
Article Abstract:
Employees suffering from alcoholism can be helped by their managers to recover and continue working. The key to overcoming the disease often lies with a management willing to recognize the problem and act on it. Steps managers can take to help troubled employees include: find a community agency or group that provides professional employee assistance and learn how to use their services, interview the employee offering a choice between discipline or professional couselling, set up the counselling appointment immediately if the offer is accepted, continue monitoring work performance. Alcoholism or drug abuse problems are found at all employment levels.

Article Abstract:
The Colorado Department of Education uses an EasyLink electronic mail network system from Western Union to connect microcomputers from fifty locations to transmit administrative, legislative, and educational data instantly to all of its school boards and districts. With a modem, users can relay messages over standard telephone lines to any network location. The network includes seven electronic bulletin boards for conveying information on upcoming events and employment opportunities. In the future, the state wants to save postage costs by sending and returning electronically formatted reports.
