IBM Proposes to Buy 18 Percent of MCI - Telecommunications Access Furthers Worldwide Communications Strategy

Article Abstract:

A proposal by IBM to buy eighteen percent of MCI Communications Corp., probably cause a shakeout in the long-distance telecommunications industry, if given regulatory approval. The acquisition would give MCI the potential to challenge primary competitor AT&T in telecommunications and possibly in the future, in data communications. Included in the proposal is MCI's acquisition of IBM's Satellite Business Systems, its satellite communications network. IBM's access to the network and telecommunications hardware from newly-acquired Rolm Corp. gives IBM a communications network capable of competing with AT&T's Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) planned for introduction in 1986 or 1987. Analysts project that IBM plans to own MCI fully within three years.
