Interdisciplinarity in Operational Research - in the Past and in the Future: An Invitation to IFORS'84 in Washington D.C

Article Abstract:

The theme for the IFORS'84 Conference is 'Co-operation - The Culture for O.R. Success'. This paper is the text of a 1983 address presented in preparation for IFORS'84. Interdisiplinarity is the emphasis. From its beginnings in the 1930s, operational research (OR) was of interdisciplinary composition. That emphasis has been lost. OR must regain this characteristic in order to deal with reality. Two necessary conditions are mutual appreciation and interdisciplinary communication. The concept should be extended to all scientific disciplines. It is necessary for OR success. A figure shows the natural and social science relation.
