Internet access for travelers
Article Abstract:
Internet access for travelers has gotten easier and less expensive, but accessing the Net when away from home or the office is still a process fraught with opportunities for things to go wrong. A veteran of mobile computing recommends pre-trip research, saying it handles 80% of problems encountered on the road. To plan for a trip, the first thing for travelers to do is understand their "Internet traveler's access profile." For example, if someone only needs to check e-mail once or twice a day, their requirements will differ from those of someone who needs to stay in constant touch, sending and receiving file updates. A profile, therefore, will specify what sorts of work need to be done and how much time is likely to be spent doing them. In working out a profile, constraints also need to be considered. For example, the speed of a modem or other connection could be significant.

Basic checklists for Internet users on the road
Article Abstract:
Using the Internet while travelling can be complicated, time-consuming and expensive. There are several steps users can take to reduce the problems associated with accessing the Internet on the road. First, users should have their own personal ISP account for both personal and backup use while travelling. Users should also document important information, such as account names and passwords, TCP/IP addresses and a list of modem phone numbers and other local access information for the region. Users should also bring URL information and security ID information for logging into a VPN. In addition to the normal equipment carried on the road, travelling users should install dialer and TCP/IP software, a Web browser and Telnet and FTP clients before they embark on their journey.
