Makers Agree on Standards for 3.5 Inch Microfloppy Disk
Article Abstract:
Sony and twelve other manufacturers have entered into an agreement regarding the compatibility standards for the 3.5 inch microfloppy disk. This disk should contain eighty tracks, track density of 135 tracks per inch, bit density of 8,187 bits per inch. Companies will use the MFM recording method, with a capacity of 0.5 megabytes on each side. The disk will be eighty-six millimeters in diameter. Sony is offering nonexclusive licensing to media manufacturers who will promote this standard.

These 3-inch disk drives are believed to be the most prominent small floppy disk storage devices. They provide ease of handling, small size, high reliability, fast access and minifloppy plug compatibility. Approximately 500,000 units are expected to be produced by 1984. The floppy disk drive has become the most convenient storage device. The 3.5-inch disk drive has been designed for use with the smaller, personal computer system. It provides a large capacity, small size, high reliability and ease of use. This drive is compatible with the 5.25-inch disk drives.
