Set your code free
Article Abstract:
Open source refers to software source code that is not kept as proprietary but made available, mostly through the Internet, to the community at large. Examples of open source software incudle Linux, BIND, sendmail, Apache and Perl; Netscape had also released the source to its Web browser in Mar 1998. Microsoft, on the other hand, follows the opposite path, preferring instead to lock up its software development protocols. Open sourcing of software code allows software companies to save on development costs because other programmers can pitch in and enrich the source code. It is also a way by which companies can link up with their user communities. Users, on their part, can take advantage of innovation rather than be slowed by it. Open source enables a vast community of programmers to participate in the upgrading of a code.

Talking survival: a developer's roundtable
Article Abstract:
A roundtable discussion focused on how to succeed in the highly competitive multimedia development market. The consensus on starting a new CD-ROM company is that a CD-ROM company now requires a significant amount of backing and the smaller developers have less of a chance than before. However, those who succeed must have a vision and a thorough understanding of this unique market. The CD-ROM market has changed and development companies have had to change to accommodate the new market. Focus-group testing has become more important and the most successful companies keep close track of the competition. Developers must also pay attention to the retail market, where top development companies send their own staff to stores to arrange their boxes on the shelves.
