Entrepreneurs in digital media should look to their return on investment to evaluate all major decisions in running their businesses. The return on investment measure should take precedence over other measurements such as total cost of ownership, cost of getting new technology, and cost and time taken to learn new technology. Unlike inaccurate cost of ownership data, return on investment deals with how the deployment of a particular technology creates value for the company, and how fast it brings back its total cost of ownership. Technology deployments that are successful create higher quality and more artistically valuable products, reduce costs through reduced time, reduce time taken to sell completed work, and they also benefit the work environment to attract and keep talented workers. The most successful multimedia firms will embrace cross-media authoring, media asset management, database publishing, collaboration networks, live object technologies and embedded knowledge clients.

New-media entrepreneurs can create a profitable business by following a five-stage growth plan that emphasizes revenue, branding, systems and talent. Entrepreneurs first need to cover basic expenses, primarily with work-for-hire projects. This requires a system that meets business needs, particularly time accounting. The second stage involves on-going projects for development and deployment. Clients typically pay a retainer, which allows the hiring of staff. The third stage of growth involves industrialized production, which allows production to be increased or decreased quickly. Stage four manages the transformation of idea development into business-process systems and software, while stage five is the pinnacle, a media franchise. This business obtains its profit primarily from licensing fees.

Developers need to recognize the importance of reusing and repackaging existing digital media assets, particularly to prospective clients. This concept views an interface as a brand that provides viewers with a memorable association that can be identified with its creators. The content then becomes merely content conveyed by the brand. One developer obtained a lucrative kiosk proposal by using reusable assets and meeting a customer's business needs. The developer underbid competitors by licensing its existing kiosk technology to the customer. The deal hinged on the client allowing the developer to generate outside income by selling the advertising placements on the kiosks. While a portion of the advertising sales would be given to the client, the majority would be kept in-house.
