Newsfront: Portables to Take a Larger Bite of Corporate Microcomputer Sale
Article Abstract:
A survey of data processing-management information systems executives by the Newton-Evans Research Company shows that, by the end 1985, seven per cent of the microcomputer installations will be portables, primarily Compaqs and IBMs. Seventy-five per cent of the companies plan to buy IBM microcomputers: IBM PC XTS; IBM PCs; and IBM PC 3270s in that order. One in six will opt for the the Digital Rainbow 100 and Professional 350. Over ninety-five per cent use spreadsheets, word processing and graphics software. Integrated software is perceived to be the area of greatest need, and security the greatest concern.

Newsfront: ANSC Z39 Subcommittee Agrees on Software Numbering Guidelines
Article Abstract:
The American National Standards Committee Z39 has established, for review, a system for numbering mini- and microcomputer software. The numbering is useful for ordering, inventorying, shipping, and sales tracking. Each unique software item will receive a number that reflects the maker or supplier, the name of the product, its medium, and any distinctive feature, plus a check digit.
