The Technology Cafeteria
Article Abstract:
Office automation can be a confusing and costly task for a businessman unless he keeps up-to-date on new technology and comparative costs. Advanced phone systems, including a private branch exchange (PBX) and least-cost routing of phone calls, can save money and improve efficiency. In another form of communications, electronic mail and voice message systems can meet the needs of intermediate and large organizations. Teleconferencing, however, will not be economical for another decade. Professional workstations can be used for electronic spread sheets, word processing, business graphics and data base management systems. On the other hand, electronic filing is becoming more popular due to its decreasing cost, superior search and retrieval capabilities and better integrity. Finally, word processors, chosen primarily for price differences as opposed to capability differences, can simplify the busy work of a business. Each businessman should examine his own needs before purchasing any type of equipment.

Article Abstract:
In viewing the COMDEX-Fall '83 computer show in Las Vegas, certain trends were evident. The IBM PC is emerging as a standard, and IBM PC compatibility is the trend. A line of PCs running on the MS-DOS operating system, costing twenty per cent less, was introduced by Sperry. A PC by Tandy, incorporating the Intel 80186 chip, runs three times faster than the IBM. Texas Instruments, Xerox, Burroughs, and ITT now have IBM compatible PCs. The integrated software application provided by Lotus 1-2-3 has set a trend in software. The windowing technique is provided by Microsoft for use with a wide range of software and by VisiOn for a narrower range.

Article Abstract:
Apple's $10,000 Lisa microcomputer runs on the 6800 32-bit microprocessor with one megabyte random access memory, two floppy disk drives and a five megabyte hard disk drive. The mouse, a cursor moving device, makes Lisa easy for new users to operate. Lisa's software programs are integrated so that their applications can be combined. LisaDraw provides illustration capabilities with text. LisaGraph allow graphs to be produced from LisaCalc's calculations. However, not many programs are compatible with Lisa and the word processing and data base programs are not on a par with some of the competitors.
