Peripheral Memories, Like Personal Computers, Come Down in Size, Go Up in Performance

Article Abstract:

Demand for floppy disk drives is expected to increase because of demand for personal computers which may reach 1.5 million in Japan and 5 million in the United States. Because of the use of FDDs for personal computers, the number of manufacturers has risen. Matsushita Communication Industrial Company is a major manufacturer. Disk drives have become thinner by utilizing flat, brushless, spindle motors. Density has become greater by heightening recording and track density. Eight-inch FDDs have a greater access speed than older mini-FDDs. Minicomputers using both eight- and five-inch disk drives will change the industry. Demand for double-sided, high-density drives will be slower after 1985. Vertical magnetic recording drives are under development. Diagrams included show FDD development, shipments, trends, and Matsushita specifications.

Promotion of Personal CAD Gains Momentum among Japan's Makers

Article Abstract:

Personal computer (PC) computer-aided design (CAD), or P-CAD systems, for under ten million yen are spurring growth in the CAD market in Japan. The market is rising up to forty percent annually, in all industries from electronics to machines. Lower priced graphics, peripherals, personal computers, and other components have stirred growth. Hitachi, Sord Computer and Fujitsu are a few of the major players. More powerful 16-bit micros are also allowing the market to grow. Yokogawa-Hewlett-Packard is one leader in plotter production. Plotters are the chosen peripheral device for CAD in Japan. The electrostatic plotter is the product of the future. A sample output and photograph of a P-CAD system are shown.
