Reports from the Ergonomic Frontiers: U.S. Moves Faster
Article Abstract:
Ergonomics refers to the compatibility between humans and their technological creations. Terminals have benefited greatly from ergonomic improvements, according to Richard Koffler of the Ergonomics Newsletter, while chairs have not. An exception is Knoll International whose vice-president is Richard Wilmot. Besides chairs, Knoll's creations include a unit to contain cables and an articulated keyboard. Larry Lerner's Environetics International deals in people-space relationships. Jim Clark, designer for Wordplex Corp., believes ergonomics standards are evolving. Paul Heckel, Quickview Systems, suggests that the problem in software user-system ergonomics is that designers are not communicators. Six principles for achieving clarity and simplicity in writing are necessary for software documentation, according to Henry Simpson of Anacapa Sciences.

Right From the Start
Article Abstract:
Office Automation has awarded its Silver Award to Home Box Office. Home Box Office Inc. sought office automation (OA) when information requirements increased among its headquarters location (New York City) and nine regional offices. As of July 1984, all offices use word processing and can communicate with both the Wang systems network and the headquarters mainframe. The switch to OA has resulted in greater productivity and significant cost savings. Also, staff members appreciate the opportunity to be more creative and effective. HBO provides a quality in-house training course. In early 1984, a Wang VS100 minicomputer system was installed. A Wangnet configuration and a flow chart of the office systems network are included. Some equipment is depicted in a photograph.
