SGI's new Indigo2: Big impact on games, VR
Article Abstract:
Silicon Graphics is adding more 3-D graphics features to its midrange Indigo2 workstations. The new graphics subsystem will also be available as a three-board upgrade. It will increase 3-D performance fivefold and will provide up to 100 times the visualization power of the existing Indigo2 model. The new system is based on new custom ASICs that will permit the workstations to process 100 million trilinear interpolations per second. Several software vendors plan to offer software for the machine. New applications will focus on analysis and visualization capabilities, although some entertainment programs will also make use of the new technology. SGI's Alias/Wavefront will be shipping a version of StudioPaint 3D that will be optimized for new new architecture. The new product will speed up interactive real-time shading and rendering. Silicon Graphics plans to continue support for its lower-end Onyx models as well.

Authoring software
Article Abstract:
Most of a multimedia production is generated from an authoring software package. The authoring software combines text, graphics, audio and other multimedia elements into a single application. Because it must account for multiple external formats, the authoring software often blends together several editors, synchronization tools and hyperlink features. Cross-platform development environments have become more popular, and most programs provide a runtime player that can work on multiple platforms. Although some programs offer binary compatibility with high-level scripting languages, these can be very difficult to master. Newer authoring tools provide Internet support and an object-oriented metaphor for easier development. Two especially popular features in authoring packages are network support and built-in multimedia databases. A directory is included of available products.
