Article Abstract:

Web developers need to consider their options and make measured decisions before attempting to offer content in other languages. Providing content in foreign languages can provide access to new business, but developers need to keep in mind that it takes substantial resources to create and maintain multilingual sites. Before deciding to create content in another language, developers should be sure the non-English-speaking clientele is big enough to make up for the cost of development. Developers should concentrate only on the languages that apply most closely with the developer's market, and developers should convert only the pages the audience will require. In maintaining a localized site, developers should realize that each time the Web page is updated, the alternate language versions need to be changed as well. When performing a translation, the accented foreign language characters need to be converted to code that the Web browser understands. Every accented character has an equivalent code in HTML.
