Shockwave rates a 7.0 on the multimedia scale
Article Abstract:
Macromedia's Shockwave does not require programming expertise in order to develop Web sites containing interactive animations with sound and video. Many of the major software vendors are supporting Shockwave, including Netscape, America Online, CompuServe and SGI. The Shockwave development kit is available as a free add-on to Director 4.0 for compressing Director movies for transmission and playback over the Internet. Director's capabilities, especially the animation and interactive features, will be useful for Internet advertising, online gaming, catalogs, entertainment, and any other application that employs graphics and emphasizes user feedback. Shockwave is easy to use, but has limitations resulting from bandwidth and Web security measures. The software lacks QuickTime support, but includes a guide to producing Shockwave movies.

Autodesk takes 3D Studio to the Max
Article Abstract:
Autodesk's 3D Studio Max for Windows NT, $3,495, is an inspired new version of the CAD software that maximizes the operating environment while providing excellent ease-of-use. The new Windows interface represents a large step forward for Autodesk, with effortless alternation between tasks as well as full editing capacity. The new software version, which runs best with the new Intel Pentium Pro chip, is slated to be optimized for other processor environments as well and has also been opened up to allow third-party engines to be used for individual tasks. The developer API for Max will ship with every copy so that users of all levels can customize their interfaces by writing core components, which are Windows DLLs fully integrated with 3D Studio.

Web video vendors stream to the fore
Article Abstract:
Dedicated video server software adjusts video streams to avoid Web bottlenecks and lost data packets while allowing users to conduct live broadcasts. Progressive Networks, Vosaic and VXtreme offerings include an IP Multicast feature that allows many users to access a single video stream, which is useful for intranets. These offerings also include multimedia authoring tools that allow video to be synchronized with other page elements, such as Java applets and HTML, by setting pointers in the video stream. Although this technology is becoming more developed, the mass deployment of video streaming has an unclear future. Analysts think that mass market developers should focus on the delivery of high-quality video images via push systems.
