Teleconferencing - With Room Service, Too
Article Abstract:
Except for large corporations that can afford their networks, many companies and organizations can benefit by renting hotel telecommunications networks and facilities. Teleconferencing is especially suited for the dissemination of information, routine decision making, or training, but not for complex negotiations. Plans for locations, equipment use, service and security must be arranged in advance. The Holiday Inn charges $11,000 for groups of up to 500. Marriot charges approximately twenty to thirty dollars per person for 200 people at each of three locations for two hours. Hilton charges less than ninety dollars per person for 1,000 people in ten locations. Some advantages of teleconferencing are travel-cost, time saving and the ability to include more participants and key speakers. Loss of social interaction and executive travel perquisites are criticisms. A satellite network configuration is shown.

Business Graphics Software: Color it Productive
Article Abstract:
The growth in business graphics can be attributed to lower hardware costs, development of graphics software, and improved output. Color graphics are useful in showing relationships, though no more than five colors should be used together. Apple is supplying graphics capability to its Lisa and MacIntosh microcomputers. Minicomputers and mainframes can be upgraded by the addition of equipment such as the IBM X4-750 Digital Plotter ($2,000). Advanced Color Technology offer software drivers and color ink- jet printers compatible with IBM PCs and Zenith Z-100s. TREND SPOTTER and TELL-A-GRAF are examples of graphics software that is designed to be integrated with decision support systems.

Electronic Typewriters: An Update
Article Abstract:
Electronic typewriter sales continue to climb due to their relatively low price. Many are used both as a typewriter and a computer printer. Special features include visual display, internal memory, and diskette storage. Communications are also a possibility, either with other typewriters or computers. Training is much less involved than for a word processor, another advantage, although any can be upgraded to word processors. Photographs of various electronic typewriters are included.
