The making of Spaceship Princess II
Article Abstract:
April One Productions' Spaceship Princess II CD-ROM game will be developed by a team of programmers and artists who appear to thrive on chaos. The game will pick up where its predecessor, Spaceship Princess, left off: Diana is enjoying her new-found single status, jetting around the galaxy, and saving small planets from characters who look suspiciously like English-speaking European monarchs. The new story will tour Diana's 'home', detouring for puzzles and interactions with characters; the puzzles provide clues to the locations of her castle and luxury condo in Trump Tower. Players must avoid Diana's husband, chase away paparazzi, and find Camilla, as well as a new husband for Diana. The game is won by capturing all three Camillas (one from each residence) and beheading them in the Tower of London. The design meetings for the game stretch over months and entail much sturm und drang. The drama and comedy of the process are described. (Warning: no such company, no such game.)

Videoconferencing gets in sync
Article Abstract:
Only a small percentage of videoconferencing systems are desktop systems, roll-abouts and room systems still dominate the market. However, less-expensive desktop systems are becoming more feasible and coming down in price. Video actually is less important to many users than the ability to do data collaboration and application sharing. Most desktop systems include whiteboard and file sharing programs, and some are enhanced by digital simultaneous voice and data (DSVD) modems, which permit simultaneous transmission of audio and data on the same analog line. The video is important in certain vertical applications and corporate training. Customer service also benefits from video. Some banks are installing videoconference-equipped ATMs to connect customers with experts at different branches. Videoconferencing will become more widespread with Intel's new P6 processor, which will double the speed of the fastest Pentium.

Java rising: it's only a programming language, but it's got perfect timing
Article Abstract:
Sun Microsystems' Java programming language promises to fulfill the promise of multimedia over the Internet. Some industry observers believe Java will render operating systems and applications obsolete. Java is being enthusiastically received by users, primarily because of its design as an interpreted language. This means that Java applications do not require compiling for each operating system. The applets will run without modification in any environment. This the first programming language to be optimized for the Internet, and its compact code and security features make it easy to deliver multimedia content over narrow-bandwidth connections. The use of executable content makes Java applets portable and interactive as well as compact.
