Toshiba leverages head start to stay ahead in smart cards

Toshiba Corp. intends to use its 17-year experience in smart card operations to preserve its lead in the industry. The company, which unveiled its first smart card system in 1984, continues to hone its expertise in the technology in the belief that the IC cards will be of vital importance in the future when the use of electronic information networks becomes more commonplace. Toshiba, which already has six smart cards in the market, is participating in the Smart Commerce Japan project, a test of smart cards as electronic money that began in October 1998.

Hitachi, Infineon enter MultiMediaCard deal
Article Abstract:
Hitachi Ltd and Infineon Technologies AG have entered into a joint product specification and production deal to promote the MultiMediaCard as an industry standard. By incorporating Hitachi's AND-format flash memory and the MultiMediaCard interface know-how of Infineon, the two firms have engineered a 16MB Flash MultiMediaCard. In the third qtr of 1999, the 32MB flash MultiMediaCards will be offered, while the 64MB and 128MB versions will be available in 2000 and 2001, respectively.
