Touchscreens
Article Abstract:
A touchscreen provides an exceptionally friendly interface, where users merely touch the screen to find information. These are often used in public kiosks and in training applications. A touchscreen consists of a sensor screen, controller and software. Integrated systems are the least expensive, and come with the monitor and card already connected. An add-on configuration provides more flexibility, since users are free to select the size and type of monitor that is best for their particular application. A clip-on touchscreen attaches directly over the monitor, and are easily removed. Although these are affordable, they do not perform as well as dedicated touchscreen monitors. The controller links the touchscreen with the computer, converting the touch signals to digital input. There are several different types of technology used in touchscreens, including a capacitive touchscreen, which senses heat, as well as infrared touchscreens, acoustic wave technology screens, and force-sensing screens.

Antex StudioCard AV
Article Abstract:
Antex Electronics' $1,595 StudioCard is targeted for professional audio applications, especially nonlinear video-editing environments. The application is designed for Windows NT, although Windows 95 drivers are available. The card provides professional features and performance, although the software utilities are somewhat difficult to learn to use. The card offers four channels of analog I/O and two channels of digital I/O. It occupies a single PCI slot and requires at least 16MB of RAM and a 486-DX2/66 system. The card reads and writes SMPTE and MIDI timecode, and locks to master video clocks. Installation is well-documented and simple. The card offers true professional performance, but its most impressive feature is video/audio synchronization.
