After a year, Buckley has Mercury humming
Article Abstract:
Mercury Marine Inc. President George Buckley has made the Brunswick Corp. unit profitable a year after being named to replace David Jones. In August 1997, Brunswick Chairman and CEO Peter Larson tapped Buckley, a smart cost-cutter and efficiency specialist, to boost Mercury's profits and flat sales. A year after Buckley's appointment, the Fond du Lac, WI-based company's MerCruiser stern drive owns a controlling 80% share of the I/O market in the US. In addition, Mercury has bested its major competitor Outboard Marine Corp. as the No. 1 manufacturer of outboard watercraft.

Jones targets sales, profits in 2nd year
Article Abstract:
Outboard Marine (OMC) CEO David Jones has done the impossible when he turned the financially-ailing company into profitability. OMC's 3rd qtr 1998 sales rose to $285.4 million from $275.8 million from the previous quarter. It also registered a net profit of $12.3 million, as against the $5.1 million it lost during 3rd qtr 1997. Jones said that OMC will register a profit in 1998 with more than $300 million in new orders. However, OMC still has numerous problems to face. For one, it still has difficulties in supply dealers with engines on time.
