Bouygues: pushing for a top 10 placing
Article Abstract:
French construction contractor Bouygues is keen to establish a strong presence in the UK. Indeed, it aims to become one of the leading 10 contractors in the UK within two to three years, with turnover of 300 million pounds sterling from five or six projects. It will not seek to compete with UK contractors on a traditional basis, but believes that it can offer advantages in the area of additional services, such as financial expertise. Some contractors believe that Bouygues will not be able to cope with the logistics of UK contracting unless it buys a UK company.

Striking accord
Article Abstract:
There is a new spirit of co-operation between unions and employers in the construction industry in the UK. This is exemplified by a meeting convened by Amec bosses in June 1996 at which construction union leaders and contractors gathered to plan a strategy for industrial relations in the industry. The forces behind the movement are, for employers, the threat of skills shortages and, for the unions, a weakening of their traditional position by legislation and economic conditions. The main construction unions and their leaders are profiled.
