Bring me sunshine
Article Abstract:
A program has been developed by Watts & Partners of London, England, to rapidly calculate rights to light levels in room design through the use of an AutoCAD Workstation. Measurements are usually taken to produce a Waldram diagram to determine if 0.2% or more of sky can be seen from 50% or more of the total room floor area. The 0.2% rule is set down in the BS 8206 Part 2 natural daylighting code of practice. The AutoCAD program produces a 3D image or wire diagram to show window views.

Watching the detectors: drip, drip, drip. Water ingress can cause untold damage to buildings if not stopped in time. But the latest electronic monitoring systems can detect changes in moisture levels and give early warning down a phone line or on a computer screen
Article Abstract:
Continuous observation of buildings is possible with the use of remote monitoring to give early warning of potential problems such as water ingress. Many systems use sensors inserted into timbers or masonry, and measurement of the moisture content of the material is based on electrical resistance. Such systems are of special benefit in monitoring drains and gutters and underneath flat roofs.
