Contractors' body to lobby deputy PM
Article Abstract:
The UK Labour party's Welfare to Work programme will be one of the main items under discussion when the Construction Confederation meets Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott and Construction Minister Nick Raynsford on Jul 17, 1997. The construction industry is keen to ensure that this programme attracts high quality trainees, and the Construction Confederation will call on the government to fund a scheme to train 10,000 people aged between 18 and 25 over four years. It will also seek to overturn the view among some ministers that contractors do not support the Labour party.

Clients suppress fee levels
Article Abstract:
Architects are already seeing negotiated fees reduced by clients who threaten to play them off against other practices, and there are fears that this could also spread to the consulting engineering and quantity surveying sectors. Highly competitive fee bidding is making it impossible for architects to return to profitability, and they are having to take on work at very low margins.
