Article Abstract:
Shopping centre refurbishment is becoming an increasingly significant issue for the UK construction industry as competition between shopping centres becomes fiercer and investment is made to provide additional retail space. Refurbishment work often involves the reconstruction of entrances, upgrading security and CCTV systems, replacing floor finishes, additional provision for disabled customers and improving car parking. Contractors involved in shopping centre refurbishment will face a number of challenges, including limited time available in which to undertake the work and the need to cooperate with tenants.

Article Abstract:
It is predicted the demand for call-centre operations will continue to grow in the UK, over the short term, although the increasing use of the Internet will have a negative effect on expansion in the future. Call centre operators want to be in operation as quickly as possible therefore they prefer design and build packages. The companies require deep floor plates of around 60 m wide. The buildings need good acoustics and lighting. Supporting functions require around 30-40% of the space. Plenty of toilet space and good parking facilities are also necessary due to the high number of staff.

Article Abstract:
School building is likely to become an increasingly important activity for the UK construction industry as the government makes more money available for education. School designs need to ensure that teaching and non-teaching spaces are organized in a way that makes the management of the school straightforward. It is increasingly necessary to have a minimum of surplus floor area in school developments in order to ensure maximum net benefit for public investment and to reduce recurrent costs. Environmental issues such as acoustics and lighting must also be given a high priority.
