Article Abstract:

UK housebuilders are now looking for ways to boost efficiency. This has been the driving force behind Efficient Masonry Housebuilding, which seeks to incorporate lean construction methods at the design stage. One of the most innovative ideas presented by Efficient Masonry Housebuilding is the use of a 300 mm grid on which to hang every element of a house. With a grid system, it is not necessary to dimension the site plans, and many of the problems associated with the correct placing of built elements are avoided.

Carry on at your convenience

Article Abstract:

UK retirement house builder McCarthy & Stone (M&S) have installed prefabricated pod bathrooms in a retirement development in Essex, UK. The bathroom pods were built by Rovacabin which specializes in prefabricated facilities in commercial buildings. The bathroom pods cost 2,300 pounds sterling each and are constructed off-site for transport by lorry to building developments. Using pods proved an expensive exercise for M&S, due to floor plans changes after the pods were ordered, leading to expensive alterations.

Pad locks

Article Abstract:

Some observers believe that security standards for doors and windows in the UK are not rigorous enough. The Secured By Design initiative has made a valuable contribution to improving security standards for these products, but still sets standards which are considerably lower than those which apply in Europe. It is possible that products used in the UK will eventually be amended, while new products, such as a lock which combines a mortice lock and nightlatch into one cylinder lock unit, may be adopted.
