Article Abstract:

The creation of the Construction Industry Trading Electronically (CITE) in April 1995, to provide a UK-based electronic data interchange (EDI) network, is one of several examples of recent developments in the information technology industry relating to construction. CITE was formed by 20 industry companies, and it now has a subscriber base of 50. Details of other developments are discussed, including automated taking-off, computer-aided sales and marketing, and collaborative technologies.

Terminal to terminal: A Bolton-based steel fabricator is designing the structure of Hong Kong's new airport without leaving Greater Manchester

Article Abstract:

Watson Steel of Lostock, Greater Manchester, is using software packages to create and verify CAD geometry for steel sections for the Chek Lap Kok airport terminal in Hong Kong, designed by Sir Norman Foster & Partners and Ove Arup & Partners. E-mail has been used extensively and an Internent File Transfer Protocol server was established to enable other project partners to log in.

IT managers must decide whether to use a legacy system to replace IBM mainframe programs or switch to package programs on standard hardware. The aim of 'business process re-engineering' is to use computer systems to remove the corporate hierarchy and simplify workflows.
