Coast Guard to require certification for nav lights

Article Abstract:

The Coast Guard is requiring pleasure-boat builders to install only certified lights in their boats. The navigation lights onboard many boats today are substandard, posing as a hazard to skippers trying to keep a lookout for other boats in the dark. The proper discernment of lights is of the utmost importance so sailors can determine if the other boats they encounter in the dark are coming, going or crossing. On the other hand, United Laboratories reports that half of navigation lights submitted for testing fail to meet the minimum requirements.
