Getting what you pay for
Article Abstract:
Some 7 billion pounds sterling is spent on domestic building work in the UK. The building industry has difficulty in stopping substandard or cowboy builders operating particularly in the home improvements market. The UK construction industry should introduce a quality standard for the industry which would be easily recognized by the public. The Inland Revenue should be given greater powers to pursue cowboy builders and therefore stop their businesses being so lucrative. The public must be more careful when employing a builder by asking for references and personal recommendations.

Why pay to get hurt?
Article Abstract:
The UK construction industry has been affected by a shortage of work and their capital has been eroded by high rates of interest during the 1990s. The UK real estate industry and the price of homes have been hit by high interest rates which has meant that a recovery in 1994 lasted only a short time. This has affected support for the government among homeowners. The ruling Conservative Party has also relied on the construction industry for financial support which is now being eroded.

The direct approach: with skilled workers in a minority and a rush of lottery-funded work predicted, wise contractors should be thinking of employing their own workforce again and giving them a proper training
Article Abstract:
Skilled workers in the construction industry are a minority, and the notion that firms should train their own craftsmen was killed off during the boom. Employers found that the direct employment of labour was complicated and wastefull, and subcontractors could provide a workforce where and when it was needed. It is predicted that there will be a rush of lottery-funded work but a lack of skilled labour.
