International Paper buys Champion for $7.3 billion

Article Abstract:

Champion International Paper Corp has been acquired by Purchase, NY-based International Paper Co for about $7.3 billion. The acquisition, made in May 2000, is expected to enhance International Paper's position as one of the top paper vendors to direct marketing firms and printing companies. The purchase of Champion, placed at $75 per share of its common stock, also edged out UPM-Kymmene of Finland from making its first major acquisition in the US market.

Earthlink buys ISP subscribers from Post-Dispatch

Article Abstract:

Earthlink Inc has acquired the Web service division of postnet.com. Its acquisition of the Web site for Pulitzer Inc's St Louis Post-Dispatch provides Earthlink Inc with an additional 14,000 Internet service subscribers in Jan 2001. Postnet.com customer accounts will be changed to Earthlink packages that are comparable in offering and price before the end of January. The deal comes in the wake of other purchases by Earthlink in 2000, which is part of its growth strategy.

Bertelsmann unit buys Zooba.com

DirectGroup Bertelsmann of New York, NY, has acquired e-mail marketer Zooba.com and plans to transfer a 50% stake in Zooba.com to Bookspan, a book club partnership formed by Bertelsmann Inc and Time Inc. Zooba.com provides a free subscription-based service that creates and delivers e- mails with personalized content based on an individual's designation of topics.
