Job sites and dueling fields
Article Abstract:
The construction industry could explore a form of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) unearthed by ADR expert Prof Douglas H. Yarn. Yarn has conducted research on 18th- and 19th-century dueling codes that have potential applications in contemporary construction dispute resolution. In the case of the 1842 duel between Abraham Lincoln and James Shields, for example, Yarn illustrated the effective use of Seconds, who were men of importance and high esteem in their community, in preventing a dispute from escalating into a tragic affair for the warring parties.

Service = success at Delfino Insulation
Article Abstract:
Bohemia, NY-based Delfino Insulation Co generates 60% of its revenues from the installation of insulation, but its success has largely been due to the fact that its owners focus on the services that they can provide to building contractors. As a result, the 45-year-old family-owned company employs more than 80 people and uses 30 vans to serve the Long Island, Westchester and Hudson Valley Region of New York state. Its attention to its building contractors' needs has helped the business to expand from one location to five within an eight-year period.
