Natural disasters: How to account for the cost of rebuilding
Article Abstract:
The destruction caused by Hurricane Andrew in South Florida in 1992 has made housing construction cost accounting difficult for builders. High demand for labour and materials in the region has led to shortages, which have increased the cost of building new houses or rebuilding damaged ones. Damaged houses will have to be rebuilt following stricter building laws, which will also drive up costs. Builders also have the problem of liability for homes damaged by the hurricane, as some homeowners may try to claim against them.
