Manchester united: to keep one step ahead of global competition, Manchester university and UMIST have combined four existing departments into one unique federal school of business and management
Article Abstract:
Manchester university and UMIST, its autonomous science and technology offshoot, formed the Federal School of Business and Management in Manchester two years ago. Facilities needed to be brought together, and architect Hodder Associates was appointed to extend existing buildings, while ORMS won the contract to design a new building for teaching and research. The new building will stand as a gateway to the cluster of higher education buildings and will be clad in pink sandstone, with the three upper floors sheathed in a translucent window wall.

People in glass ships
Article Abstract:
Western Morning News, Plymouth, UK, newspaper publisher, has had a new 15 million pounds sterling glass ship-like building, designed by Nicholas Grimshaw and Partners, architect, built on a hill. The building, which is a prominent landmark, houses offices and a restaurant for 450 staff, printing technology and warehouses. The building is considered a brilliant piece of architecture, but heavy canvas blinds have had to be fitted to solve the serious problem of glare on VDUs, and the external view of the building is criticised.
