MarineMax builds in two-year service plan

MarineMax Inc. of Clearwater, FL, is offering a two-year service package on all new boats measuring 21 feet and beyond. The company is offering coverage of all routine maintenance, such as tuneups and oil change, free of charge as part of a strategy to make boat ownership more attractive and hassle-free. Meanwhile, MarineMax, the biggest boat and motor dealership in the world with 34 retail sites in seven states, posted revenues of $84.83 million for the fiscal 1998 third quarter ended Jun. 30, 1998, compared to $62.08 million in the same year-ago period. Third-quarter net profits were $4.74 million compared to $3.83 million last year.

MarineMax Inc., the biggest dealer of powerboats and marine engines in the recreational marine industry, is ready to broaden its reach after raising $58.12 million from an initial public offering of common stock. The company will use the proceeds of the offering to upgrade its computer information systems and pay off debt. Some money will be spend to acquire existing dealerships, mainly in deep-water markets and in the Great Lakes. MarineMax sees growth coming from increased sales at some or all of its existing 28 retail stores and through acquisitions.

Olympic Boat Centers plans to expand its operations into the US' major boating markets through acquisitions of top operators in the new markets. Olympic's management said the objective is to replicate the company's cluster-style operating strategy in Washington and British Columbia elsewhere in the US.
