Marley cultivates its green shoots
Article Abstract:
David Trapnell takes over from Sir George Russell as executive chairman of UK building materials manufacturer Marley. Marley has made 1,000 redundancies worldwide since 1992. Two Thermalite block plants were closed in Aug 1992 and salaries have been frozen until 1994. Marley remains optimistic about 1993. Trapnell believes that low interest rates will stimulate the economy. About 70% of its trading profits are from overseas and it intends to expand further in Germany, the US and South Africa. Marley intends to double the size of its Hanover plant and then expand into Eastern Europe.

It will have no regulatory powers and its role will be reviewed 2 years after its establishment. Participation will be offered to non-EC members, such as central and eastern Europe.
