PWC record brings award to Maryland
Article Abstract:
Maryland's Natural Resources Police is the recipient of the Boating Education Advancement Award for the Southern region of the US. The National Safe Boating Council has given the award to NRP for zero personal watercraft (PWC) fatalities in Maryland since 1995. For the past six years, the number of PWC registered in Maryland has increased by three times. The figure makes up to 7% of the total boats that were involved in 40% of boating accidents in 1997 that caused personal injuries. The most frequent violations NRP has cited to operators are failure to slow down to six knots when within 100 feet of another boat, person, pier or piling.
