The Ventana plan in Sun City West, AZ, received a 1993 Best in American Living Merit Award. The open plan and use of high flat ceilings and stacked glass evoked a feeling of spaciousness. The designer used zoning to create a house with well-defined public and private areas. The exterior presents a semi-Mediterranean facade with its hipped roof and gables while architectural detailing enhances the roof design. The formal area consists of the formal entry, living and dining room and den. The informal areas include the kitchen, nook and family room. Bedrooms form their own private space.

Affordable plan squeezes most out of smaller space

Article Abstract:

The Maison plan of the California Marquis in Palmdale, CA, received a 1993 Best in American Living Grand Award. The design maximized the small available space and incorporated three bedrooms and baths. The use of glass, an open floor plan and the open space over the living and dining areas kept the interior from looking cramped. A columned enclosed porch leads to the foyer which, in turn, opens to the living/dining area and the stairway. An owner may specify the addition of a private deck which opens from the master bedroom through french doors.
