Prefabricated houses based on standardised designs and components have now become very popular in Japan, and more than 20% of Japanese homes are now prefabricated in factories on the outskirts of cities. This process is now becoming industrialised, allowing more efficient construction and high standards of quality control. Large prefabrication concerns have now gained a positive image, and are attracting customers by offering a choice of interiors.

Underhand practices such as discounting could severely damage the image of construction management, according to Stephen Porter, managing director of project manager Arnold Project Services. He is hoping to take action against this trend with a new construction management forum. This will bring together practitioners, their clients and package subcontractors, and will work to set standards for construction management.

The Science Museum has invested 3.5 million pounds sterling in renovating its basement area to add to its facilities for children. It has established a new schools entrance, and access has been improved with a new lift core. Most of the basement has now been converted into a flexible assembly and circulation area, with three galleries leading off this space. The development also includes a shop and toilets.
