Stick to where you know
Article Abstract:
UK building firms do better when they concentrate their efforts on local projects, rather than trying to expand their work load to other areas. Firms often purchase operations in order to further their name at national level, especially within London and other metropolitan cities. Enterprises may fail due to personality conflicts and differences in management styles, leading to delayed contracts and image problems. Firms which do purchase contactors from other areas are advised to retain management and ensure work can be undertaken in the most suitable way for that area.

Desperate measures
Article Abstract:
Wimpy has swapped its construction operation in return for Tarmacs housing division, to allow both companies to concentrate on their own businesses, and to reduce overheads relating to duplication of effort. Although the city sees this exchange as being elegant, others think that it is a desperate bid to survive under difficult marketing conditions. Each company is choosing to focus on its core business, although the risks associated with investing everything on one business are much greater than if some diversification exists.

A 'no win' situation
Article Abstract:
Whoever wins the 1997 general election in the United Kingdom, another economic recession is likely, which will cause a reduction in work for the construction industry. To compensate against this possibility builders should only work for a profit and save sufficient reserves of money in order to survive a recessionary period. The influence of the European Union will cause prices to rise, therefore builders involved in long projects should consider the likelihood of increasing costs when finalizing contracts.
