Surgical scars
Article Abstract:
The conversion of St. John's Hospital, London, United Kingdom, into residential accommodation has finally been achieved at a cost of ten million pounds sterling, although progress was severely hampered by restrictions set down by certain members of the development team. Several private developers, management consultants and public authorities were involved during the conversion exercise, which resulted in the unnecessary delay of the project. Thames Housing Association stipulated design and size restrictions, and each of the resulting 97 flats cost more than new build flats.

Taking over the asylum
Article Abstract:
The Avon & Gloucestershire College of Health in Bristol, United Kingdom, is a self-contained teaching college for 1200 which has been successfully created from a disused mental asylum. The buildings, which used to be the home of the Bristol Lunatic Asylum, are grade II listed, and were converted gradually over a four-year period for approximately 8.5 million pounds sterling. They very closely suited the needs of the college in terms of space and proportion, although extensions were necessary for the main reception area and reading rooms.

Hammer beam horror
Article Abstract:
The Royal Holloway Sanatorium at Virginia Water in Surrey, United Kingdom, is undergoing a major restoration and conversion exercise, led by the firm of architects, Octagon, and costing an estimated 12 million pounds sterling. The building has remained empty for 14 years, and now has extensive wet and dry rot and damage due to vandalism. As a grade I listed structure, the restoration work has to retain as much of the original structure as possible. All aspects of the project will be closely inspected by English Heritage.
