The progress and future plans of the 56km Gotthard Alptransit tunnel between Erstfeld and Bodio are reviewed. The Gotthard tunnel is constructed mostly by using tunnel boring machines (TBMs).

Tunnel construction through Swiss molasse formation at Uetliberg is investigated. The construction project uses Wirth's Tunnel Bore Extender to ream out the 2,700m pilot tunnel.
