Taking care of business: the former brewer who is to be the HSE's new head of construction safety
Article Abstract:
Sandra Caldwell is to become chief inspector of construction safety on the board of the Health and Safety Executive when Stuart Nattrass retires at the end of March. Caldwell is the first woman to achieve the rank of chief inspector of the HSE and has 20 years of HSE experience in construction and other industries. She is currently head of safety policy and she will continue Natrass' work in reducing construction accidents. She will have to deal with issues such as the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations and the rising cases of asbestos-related illnesses.

Sprint finish to the top of the world

The Japanese and Korean construction teams employed to build each of Malaysia's twin Petronas Towers were in fierce competition with one another to finish the project first. The buildings projects proceeded in parallel and were quickly completed within a two-year period. Japanese Majaus and Korean SKJ construction groups both strove to erect the pinnacle more quickly than the other, and the Korean team finally won the race.

Ivan from Mivan: the chairman of Northern Ireland's international contractor

Ulsterman Ivan McCabrey, aged 49, set up Antrim-based Mivan, a construction contractor, in 1975. The company, with contracts valued at 100 million pounds sterling a year, works in 28 countries and has a diverse client base. Mivan specializes in services including aluminium formwork and ship-fitting, and claims to be the world's largest cruise-ship-fitter.
