1991 resulted in poor turnover and profits for the top 50 UK contractors. Analyst from Nikko Securities, Mark Hake believes that the year 2001 will bring name changes to the top 10 UK construction industry positions. This is due is to 3 main factors: consolidation which will give amalgamated Wimpey-Woodrow 2nd place in the imaginary table, direct European participation which will give Bouygues 4th place; and acquisitions growth which will give P and O-Trafalgar House 1st place.

Multidisciplinary firm WS Atkins is the UK's leading construction consultant in 1997, according to league tables compiled by Building magazine. Along with many other consultants, it has considerably increased its chartered staff. Indeed, the leading 100 consultants employed 25,697 chartered staff in the UK as of Jul 1997, up by 8% from Jul 1996. They received an average of 27.5 million pounds sterling in fees in the last financial year, a rise of 10%.

European top 300 contractors
Article Abstract:
A list of the top 300 European contractors is presented. French contractors Bouygues is ranked top in 1996, as it was in 1995. Bouygues employs 91,894 people and its profit in 1995 was 8.76 billion pounds sterling.
