USPS's CFO retires amid relocation flap

The US Postal Service's (USPS) CFO M Richard Porras is retiring after the Office of the Inspector General issued a report in Apr 2000 outlining the excessive amounts that were spent on his and controller John Ward's relocation. The USPS was found to have spent about $250,000 on moving expenses and miscellaneous allowances which were not approved by the postal board of governors. Porras has not announced his last day in office.

USPS seeks test of priority mail presort discount
Article Abstract:
The US Postal Service has filed a case that seeks a three-year experimental classification for Priority Mail presort discounts. The filing includes discounts for three presorting options: area distribution centers, three-digit prefixes and five-digit ZIP code sorts. The proposed discounts are: 12 cents per piece for sortation to the ADC level; 16 cents per piece for sortation to the three-digit level; and 25 cents per piece for sortation to the five-digit level.

FedEx installs drop boxes in Florida
Article Abstract:
Federal Express Corp (FedEx) has begun installing more than 30 fedEx drop boxes in Apr 2001 at US Postal Service (USPS) outlets in Fort Lauderdale, FL, and other cities in Broward County, FL. The Florida drop boxes are the second pahse of FedEx's test marketing plan with the USPS under a seven- year shipping deal struck in Jan 2001 that lets FedEx place a self-service drop box in every US postal location.
