Chain reaction

Article Abstract:

Balfour Beatty and Tarmac are two of the companies in the construction industry which are beginning to experience the benefits of supply-chain management. Balfour Beatty has reduced the number of suppliers it uses by 75% to 7,000 over a 15-month period. Tarmac has opted for a mixed approach to supply-chain management. It uses preferred suppliers for contracts which involve competitive tendering and preferred partnering for other contract types. Both companies are developing systems which will allow them to monitor the performance of suppliers.
